About the position

The Research Assistant (RA) position at the University of California, Berkeley, is an exciting opportunity to join the Goldman School of Public Policy's Risk-Resilience Research (RRR) team. The RRR lab is dedicated to improving justice, safety, and well-being for at-risk communities through policy-relevant research. The RA will work closely with faculty, staff, and students on various ongoing projects, including implementing and evaluating a videogame-supported afterschool program for young, at-risk adolescents and testing a hospital staff training program aimed at preventing violence among adult psychiatric inpatients at Napa State Hospital. This role is integral to the team, assisting with data collection, participant recruitment, and coordination of training sessions, while also contributing to innovative solutions for complex social issues. The position requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills, as the RA will interact with community partners, stakeholders, and team members. The RA will be responsible for supervising gaming activities, troubleshooting technical issues, managing participant tracking and retention, and conducting interviews and surveys at research sites. The role also involves attending team meetings, processing data, and performing other duties as required. The ideal candidate will have a background in research or data collection, a commitment to cultural responsiveness, and the ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment. Responsibilities

  • Help implement a highly structured group intervention at multiple Bay Area middle schools, supporting the lead facilitator by supervising gaming, troubleshooting technical issues, and organizing tournaments.
  • Manage participant recruitment, tracking, and retention.
  • Conduct participant interviews and surveys for direct data collection at research sites.
  • Assist in coordinating hospital staff training sessions.
  • Attend team meetings, correspond with the study team, and process data.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work well with community partners, stakeholders, academics, and students.
  • Strong organizational skills to effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to summarize and present complex information clearly.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with video games and ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Ability to take initiative and manage workload under supervision.
  • Cultural responsiveness to work with a diverse population.
  • Availability during business hours with flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Reliable transportation to research sites and punctuality.

Nice-to-haves

  • Clinical and/or research interviewing experience.
  • Experience working in school or afterschool settings.
  • Background in mental health and/or education fields.
  • Experience with R or SPSS statistical software/databases.
  • Fluency in Spanish (strongly preferred).
  • Experience working with children and adolescents (strongly preferred).
