The Research Assistant position at ADM Edible Bean Specialties in Caldwell, ID, is a full-time, hourly non-exempt role focused on supporting the development of market-leading dry bean and lima bean varieties. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the assistant plant breeder and will be responsible for conducting daily operations of the bean breeding program and nuclear seed stock production. This includes assisting with harvest, seed handling and processing, seed treating and packaging, greenhouse production, housekeeping, and general maintenance. The role requires a passion for agriculture and plant breeding, as well as a commitment to safety and quality control in all aspects of the breeding program. The Research Assistant will engage in various tasks such as crossing, trait screening, selection, variety advancement, data collection, data entry, and managing early generation nurseries and yield trials. Quality control of nuclear seed stock production is also a critical responsibility, which involves monitoring color breaks, conducting thorough cleanouts, plot rogueing, bean picking, and variety purification. The position demands physical stamina, as it includes prolonged periods of standing and sitting, walking long distances, and working in various environmental conditions. The candidate must be able to lift up to 55 pounds and wear a respirator when necessary. In addition to technical skills, the ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, an organized and detail-oriented approach, and a willingness to learn new skills across multiple disciplines. The role also requires basic equipment maintenance capabilities and familiarity with farm equipment and greenhouse production systems. The Research Assistant will operate research mills and farm equipment, treat and package seed stock, and maintain accurate seed inventories. Overtime and weekend work may be required as needed to meet the demands of the breeding program.
