About the position

The Research Assistant position at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a full-time role focused on supporting analysis and research across various policy areas, particularly food assistance and housing assistance programs. The role involves analyzing large datasets, preparing visual presentations of findings, and providing research support to various teams. This position is designed for individuals looking to build a career in public policy, with opportunities for skill development and collaboration on impactful economic security policies.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze large government survey microdata and administrative government data in Excel and Stata to assess policy proposals.
  • Provide analytical support by writing programming code in Stata to extract, transform, clean, manipulate, and analyze quantitative data.
  • Prepare tables, graphs, and other data visualizations to present analytic findings and explain complex policies to different audiences.
  • Factcheck and update CBPP's reports, blogs, and other products.
  • Develop checks for analytical work, documenting sources and methods to ensure accuracy and transparency.
  • Provide research support for team members who offer technical assistance and strategic guidance to policymakers and advocacy organizations.
  • Assist in responding to information and speaking requests from policymakers, media, and partner organizations under tight deadlines.
  • Collaborate with team members to apply an equity lens to all work, including public products and internal processes.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support the team's goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, public policy, statistics, or a field requiring strong quantitative skills.
  • Up to two years of relevant experience.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills, including proficiency in Excel and statistical software (Stata or R).
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and transparency in analytic work.
  • Commitment to economic and racial justice, focusing on addressing institutional racism and economic inequality.
