About the position

The primary purpose of the Research Assistant I position is to perform basic and translational research in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques to develop and investigate 3-dimensional cell culture models for in vitro analysis of tumor formation and micro-environmental interactions. Experience in laboratory management and procurement is important.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates and participates in scientific research projects under the direction of a professional staff member.
  • Functions independently in the design of research experiments involving the generation and maintenance of genetically engineered mice.
  • Characterizes various genetically engineered mouse models and performs complex intercrosses between various murine strains.
  • Utilizes initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing the details of experiments.
  • Determines specific goals or objectives to be obtained, evaluates research data and develops and revises techniques or approaches to address problems.
  • Develops new areas of investigation based upon prior experience under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Records and interprets results from murine experiments including genotypes, tumor formation rates, and survival statistics.
  • Conducts experiments involving analysis of angiogenesis and endothelial barrier integrity in brain development and cancer.
  • Responsible for laboratory management, murine colony maintenance and breeding.
  • Remains current on literature and techniques relating to the field of investigation.
  • Presents data at weekly laboratory meetings within the department.
  • Prepares and presents a scientific analysis of the results and assists in preparation of scientific publications.
  • Maintains knowledge of the institution's safety requirements and procedures in general laboratory practice.
  • Complies with departmental and institutional policies regarding biochemical and radiation safety educational requirements.
  • Maintains records of all radioisotopes purchases, handling, storage and disposal in accordance with regulations.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and reagents; monitors arrival and distribution.
  • Maintains laboratory cell stocks, including an inventory log.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences.
  • No experience required.
