About the position

The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a Research Assistant I for a temporary position within the Public Health/Health Sciences department. This role is part of the DEI Centers Project, which aims to explore the history and role of student activism, administrative leadership, and fiscal decisions in the founding and maintenance of the Center for Gender and Sexuality. The project is led by Dr. Lisa Lapeyrouse and is funded by the University of Michigan's Inclusive History Project. The research assistant will be responsible for three main objectives: documenting the history and role of student activism in establishing the Center for Gender and Sexuality, analyzing how changes in leadership and funding have influenced the center's infrastructure and programming, and investigating the relationship between students' sense of belonging and the center itself. This position is expected to last from July 2024 through December 31, 2024, requiring approximately 6 hours of work per week. The work schedule will be flexible and determined after hiring, accommodating the student's availability. The role is not remote and requires the assistant to work on the UM-Flint campus. Responsibilities

  • Interviewing individuals related to the research project.
  • Collecting and organizing historical documents and materials.
  • Preparing historical documents and materials for preservation.
  • Designing instruments for data collection.
  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
  • Presenting and disseminating research findings.

Requirements

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Research experience in a relevant field.
  • Availability to work at the UM-Flint Campus (not a remote position).
  • Commitment to work at least 6 hours per week.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior research experience in public health or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the Center for Gender and Sexuality's mission, programming, and clientele.
  • Undergraduate student in good standing with the University of Michigan-Flint.
