Scripps Research is a nonprofit biomedical institute renowned for its significant contributions to innovation in the field of science, celebrating a century of groundbreaking discoveries in various areas including immunology, infectious diseases, neuroscience, and cancer. The Zhu Lab is currently seeking a Research Assistant I to join their team, focusing on the development of vaccines for a range of viral pathogens such as HIV, HCV, filovirus, RSV, influenza, and Coronavirus. This role involves engaging in experimental methods that encompass molecular biology, biochemistry, protein production and purification, animal immunization, virus culture and neutralization, serological analysis, flow cytometry, single cell analysis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) of immune repertoires. The selected candidate will work closely with the Staff Scientist and Principal Investigator, contributing to various projects and potentially being acknowledged in resulting publications. The responsibilities will primarily include performing molecular biology and protein experiments such as DNA cloning, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, bacterial transformation, and protein analysis including purification and Western Blot. Additionally, the role will involve mammalian cell culture and transfection, as well as adhering to aseptic techniques while following established protocols. While the main focus will be on molecular biology and protein production, there will be opportunities to learn advanced assays in virology and immunology, and to participate in vaccine evaluation studies. The Zhu Lab is dedicated to rational vaccine design and is currently involved in clinical trials for an HIV vaccine candidate, showcasing the lab's commitment to addressing global health challenges through innovative solutions.
