About the position

The North Carolina Court of Appeals is seeking two qualified Research Assistants to provide legal research, analysis, and interpretation of case law for a Court of Appeals Judge. This entry-level position involves supporting the Judge in evaluating cases, preparing legal memoranda, and tracking current developments in the law.

Responsibilities

• Provide administrative support to the Court of Appeals Judge.
• Conduct required legal research on various court cases.
• Analyze legal data and issues relevant to cases.
• Prepare legal memoranda for the Judge's review.
• Process emergent motion applications as needed.
• Proofread published opinions and proposed opinions.
• Assist the Judge in evaluating cases filed with the court.
• Prepare draft opinions for the Judge's consideration.
• Work with Justices on complex cases involving difficult legal issues.
• Track current developments in the law.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
• Knowledge of N.C. General Statutes and N.C. Rules of Appellate Procedure.
• Ability to conduct legal research and analysis.
• Ability to draft appellate opinions and comprehend abstract legal concepts.

Nice-to-haves

• Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
