About the position

The Research Assistant I/II/III position at the O'Connell Lab involves conducting experiments related to the impact of genetic and environmental factors on hypothalamic circuits that regulate energy balance and behaviors associated with diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. The role requires a high level of organization, self-motivation, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Use brain slice electrophysiology to conduct tests, experiments, and/or procedures following standard or detailed protocol; identify and document variations that may affect the validity of the experiment.
  • Perform data collection and analysis, ensuring quality control and monitoring data for accuracy.
  • Validate and conduct studies based upon standard experimental protocols within agreed timelines with supervisor/technical manager.
  • Ensure functionality and maintenance of instrumentation; record all information daily in an official laboratory notebook.
  • Use patch clamp electrophysiology in acute brain slices to record neuronal activity and measure intrinsic and synaptic plasticity, including optogenetic control of neuronal activity.
  • Identify problems, troubleshoot and analyze variations observed in regular testing protocols; modify and adapt techniques and procedures as necessary.
  • Plan and monitor resources needed to operate the laboratory; maintain inventory control and coordinate space, field, equipment, and facilities.
  • Lead exchange of research information through demonstration and instruction; assist in grant writing and proposal development.
  • Conduct multiple experiments and maintain equipment used in those experiments; report results clearly and efficiently to supervisor.
  • Train personnel in electrophysiological techniques and manage the electrophysiology team.

Requirements

  • RA I: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 1-3 years of related experience.
  • RA II: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 3 - 6 years of directly related experience in a laboratory setting.
  • RA III: Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological sciences or related discipline plus 3 - 6 years of directly related experience, including 1+ years of experience with brain slice electrophysiology.
  • Mouse handling and husbandry skills preferred; must be able to handle mice and perform minor surgeries after training and certification.
  • Fundamental computer skills, including familiarity with Excel and Word; proficiency with electrophysiology platforms such as the pClamp suite or Axograph preferred.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate information verbally and in written form; strong attention to detail is required.

Nice-to-haves
