The Research Assistant III position at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center involves conducting a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests under the limited supervision of the principal investigator. In this role, the Research Assistant will perform both routine and non-routine laboratory tests, which may include advanced techniques such as DNA sequencing, gene cloning, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and northern blotting. The assistant will synthesize and interpret results, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of findings. The position may also involve operating and maintaining complex laboratory equipment, such as spectrophotometers and flow cytometers, and making decisions regarding the accuracy of results, including repeating procedures when necessary. The Research Assistant III will assist in planning specific research procedures and coordinating the schedules of tests and procedures. They will prepare written and/or verbal reports on the status of research and the technical procedures used, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings. The role may also require reviewing and proofreading papers and making informal presentations. The assistant is expected to have technical expertise in specific areas that exceed basic performance expectations, contributing to the laboratory by utilizing this experience and employing advanced problem resolution skills. Additionally, under the direction of the principal investigator, the Research Assistant may be responsible for the general operation of the research laboratory, which includes training others in lab techniques, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Participation in the preparation of abstracts or papers is also expected. Continuous professional development is encouraged through attendance at Medical Center lectures, courses, and conferences to enhance knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, as well as collaboration with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
