The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Assistant in the Chemical and Functional Genomics Laboratory. This position is focused on a project aimed at discovering novel biocontrol agents to manage the spread of Red Palm Weevils (RPW), which pose a significant threat to palm trees. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Kristin Gunsalus and will be based at NYU Abu Dhabi. The Research Assistant will be responsible for screening a library of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains to identify those with virulence against RPW larvae using an oral infection method. Additionally, the role involves assessing the impact of the virulent candidate Bt strains on various aspects of RPW biology, including growth, development, egg hatching, boring activity, and reproduction. The candidate will also identify and characterize the causal factors expressed in the active Bt strains through phenotypic, genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatic approaches. Furthermore, the Research Assistant will provide technical assistance for breeding RPW in the laboratory, prepare and maintain commonly used laboratory media, stock solutions, reagents, and supplies, and perform basic microscopy and imaging tasks. Applicants for this position must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological sciences, molecular biology, microbiology, genomics, or related fields, along with experience in a biology research laboratory. The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits. The position is available starting September 1, 2024, and applications will be considered until the position is filled. Interested candidates must submit their applications through Interfolio, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and two recommendation letters, all in PDF format.
