About the position

The Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler School of Engineering at Chapman University is seeking a Research Assistant for a limited-term position. This role is integral to the academic research lab, where the assistant will facilitate and conduct independent research in areas such as Human-Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous and Assistive Technology. The position is designed for individuals who are passionate about contributing to innovative research and who thrive in a collaborative academic environment. The Fowler School of Engineering, which opened in 2019, is dedicated to providing personalized education and fostering an inclusive atmosphere for students and faculty alike. The school offers undergraduate programs in various engineering disciplines and is committed to addressing global challenges through research and education. As a Research Assistant, the individual will manage the academic research lab, oversee undergraduate students, and pursue their own research projects. This includes conducting literature reviews, engaging in design thinking, and performing user studies. The assistant will also be responsible for the development of mobile applications, wearables, and other emerging technology applications. The role requires significant interaction with undergraduate students, faculty, and staff, making strong communication and organizational skills essential. The position is part-time, requiring 0-19 hours weekly, and offers a competitive pay range of $24.00-$28.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research related to the supervisor's principal research.
  • Develop mobile, wearables, and emerging technology applications.
  • Carry out experiments related to the research.
  • Oversee undergraduate students and assist in delegating tasks.
  • Train and advise undergraduate research students.
  • Conduct user studies, experimental design, and collect and analyze data.
  • Manage general lab operations, including ordering, receiving, and tracking materials and inventory.
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field, preferably in Human-Computer Interaction, app development, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in coding skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
