About the position

The Research Assistant/Associate position at the University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center involves semi-independent laboratory work focused on processing clinical and environmental samples for biobanking and culturing nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). The role requires excellent communication with clinical staff and involves various laboratory tasks, including sample processing, flow cytometric analyses, and maintaining laboratory inventories. The level of independence in this role will depend on the candidate's education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with clinicians, clinical research project managers, and laboratory personnel.
  • Perform patient sample biobanking tasks including check-in/accessioning of samples.
  • Isolate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from blood samples and process plasma/serum collections.
  • Process sputum and oral wash samples, as well as other clinical samples as needed.
  • Conduct flow cytometric analyses of cell populations.
  • Assist in maintaining stock clinical, environmental, and reference cultures, including subculturing and freezing isolates.
  • Process environmental samples such as soil, biofilms, and dust for NTM.
  • Perform isolate characterization, sequencing, and molecular analyses on NTM isolates.
  • Maintain accurate inventories and descriptions of all samples.
  • Set up and prepare microbiological assays and conduct basic quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents, buffers, culture media, and plates as needed.
  • Assist in special research projects under the direction of the Director.
  • Participate in biosafety and biomedical research-related training and maintain compliance with safety requirements.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining laboratory reports and records of results.
  • Compile and tabulate data and provide preliminary analysis at meetings.

Requirements

  • For Research Assistant: Associate degree in a basic science relevant to the field and experience in a clinical or research laboratory.
  • For Research Associate: Bachelor's degree in a basic science relevant to the field and experience in clinical or research microbiology laboratory; two years as a registered technician or technologist may substitute for a degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous work experience in a clinical or research laboratory is preferred.
