About the position

The Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD) is seeking a part-time Research Assistant to support its recently launched project on Europe's Security Order. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about international relations and diplomacy, and who wish to gain valuable experience in a non-profit think tank environment. The successful candidate will work closely with IPD's research fellow, Dr. Zachary Paikin, and research director, Dr. Arta Moeini, contributing to research efforts that promote dialogue and military restraint in international affairs. The position allows for remote work for most of the contract duration, but candidates must be available for in-person events in Washington, D.C. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage with domestic and international stakeholders in defense and international affairs, providing insights into the workings of a think tank dedicated to sustainable peace.

Responsibilities

  • Communicating with project stakeholders and participants.
  • Conducting original research on foreign policy developments in Europe, European security, and/or Russian foreign policy.
  • Taking notes and preparing meeting summary reports during project meetings and roundtables.
  • Assisting the IPD team in organizing in-person and virtual events and seminars.
  • Drafting and editing policy briefs and research reports.
  • Assisting with general administrative work as required.

Requirements

  • Relevant educational background in political science, international relations, or a related discipline (graduate studies preferred).
  • Strong command of English; French or Russian language skills are desirable.
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Demonstrated interest in European politics, European security, and/or Russian foreign policy; interest in US foreign policy debates is desirable.
  • Strong research skills.
  • High level of integrity and track record in handling confidential matters.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documents and communications.
  • Ability to work well with others and independently.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and Google Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in planning academic or think-tank events and conferences.
  • Keen interest in the restraint-oriented mission of IPD with familiarity in realist thought, peace studies, and/or diplomacy.
