The Research Assistant position provides essential support for ongoing research efforts in the Department of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University. The individual hired for this role will engage in investigating the therapeutic potential of novel pharmacological compounds aimed at treating neuropsychiatric disorders. This research will utilize cutting-edge technologies, including ex vivo electrophysiology combined with optogenetics, in vivo fiber photometry, and behavioral pharmacology in rodent models. The position is integral to advancing our understanding of these compounds and their effects on neuropsychiatric conditions. In this role, the Research Assistant will assist with a variety of experiments, including ex vivo experiments, in vivo imaging, immunohistochemistry, perfusions, and behavioral pharmacology. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing experimental results using computer-aided data analysis software and maintaining accurate databases and experimental notebooks to document results. Effective communication of results in a timely manner is crucial, as is the maintenance and genotyping of mouse colonies. The Research Assistant will also prepare buffers and reagents, assist with general laboratory operations and inventory management, and present progress during monthly lab meetings. This position requires a Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, or a related field from an accredited institution. A minimum of one year of laboratory experience is strongly preferred, particularly with scientific work involving rodents. Attention to detail, self-motivation, and a strong sense of personal responsibility are essential traits for success in this role. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, and basic computer programming skills are also preferred. Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of lab members.
