About the position

The Research Assistant position within the Precision Oncology Program for Cancer of the Prostate at the Portland VA Research Foundation involves supporting the coordination and execution of human subjects research. The role emphasizes assisting the lead study coordinator across various clinical trials, focusing on patient logistics, regulatory compliance, and data management. The position requires strong organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in processing and sending out lab samples, including blood, tissue, saliva, urine, and stool.
  • Communicate, recruit, and work with Veterans to facilitate complex clinical trials.
  • Conduct informed consent and administer surveys to patients.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of FDA and IRB guidelines that govern clinical research.
  • Enter patient data into electronic database systems.
  • Maintain organized and accurate study records.
  • Support coverage across the study team, stepping in when necessary to screen and enroll patients, request and review medical records, assist Principal Investigator with grant writing, and other study related tasks, as needed.
  • Attend research coordinator educational opportunities at OHSU and the Portland VA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher; preferably in a scientific or social science discipline.
  • Previous experience with human subjects' research preferred.
  • Clear written and oral communication in English with Veterans of all backgrounds.
  • Basic proficiency with MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Access, and Outlook.
  • Able to use critical thinking skills to make decisions that are within scope, and to recognize when decisions are out of scope.
