About the position

The University of Kansas Medical Center is seeking a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, specifically within the Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. This position is focused on basic and translational science research in the respiratory field, particularly examining the mechanisms of acute lung injury and exploring potential therapeutic strategies to modify or treat the host response to such injuries. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a laboratory as either a Principal or Co-Investigator, conducting research that contributes to the understanding and treatment of acute lung injury and related inflammatory diseases. In this role, the Research Assistant Professor will be responsible for training and educating students, residents, fellows, and faculty within a research environment. This includes mentoring and evaluating the progress of students and fellows, as well as participating in weekly lectures and discussion groups. The position also requires the candidate to actively seek extramural and internal grant funding to support their laboratory and research team. Representation of the University at national and international conferences is expected, which includes presenting scholarly contributions such as lectures and poster presentations, as well as publishing research results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Responsibilities

  • Conduct respiratory basic/translational research with a focus on acute lung injury.
  • Lead a laboratory as Principal/Co-Investigator.
  • Train and educate students, residents, fellows, and faculty in a research setting.
  • Obtain extramural/internal grant funding to support laboratory/research team.
  • Mentor and evaluate students, fellows, and faculty.
  • Participate in weekly lectures and discussion groups.
  • Represent the University at national and international conferences through scholarly contributions.
  • Publish research results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • PhD or MD in a relevant field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in basic/translational research in the respiratory field.
  • Experience in acute lung injury and inflammatory diseases.
  • Laboratory skills in molecular biology relevant to basic/translational research.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 4 years of experience in basic/translational research in the respiratory field.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring faculty/students.
  • Extramural grant funding.
