About the position

The College of Agriculture at Auburn University is seeking a Research Assistant for a one-year limited term position funded from external sources. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in implementing and maintaining greenhouse research trials focused on cotton and soybean breeding in Alabama. This position requires managing the field aspects of research trials and supervising student workers, ensuring that all research activities are conducted efficiently and effectively. The individual will be responsible for developing complex project proposals, plans, and protocols, as well as conducting non-routine experiments and investigations to pursue new knowledge and techniques in the field of crop science. In addition to managing research logistics, which includes coordinating equipment, materials, and labor needs, the Research Assistant will collect and analyze data related to research projects. The role also involves instructing and supervising students in research activities, hiring student workers, and overseeing their work. The position demands frequent travel throughout the state of Alabama, making it essential for the candidate to be adaptable and willing to engage in fieldwork under varying conditions. Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of complex project proposals, plans, and protocols.
  • Conduct non-routine experiments and investigations related to crop science and plant breeding.
  • Coordinate logistics of research, including equipment, materials, and labor needs.
  • Collect and analyze data/samples related to research projects.
  • Record and compile data/samples accurately.
  • Instruct and supervise student workers in research activities.
  • Hire and manage student workers for research tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Crop Science, Applied Biotechnology, or a closely related field.
  • For Level II: 2 years of relevant work experience in crop science/plant breeding research practices and protocols.
  • For Level III: 4 years of relevant work experience in crop science/plant breeding research practices and protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, and analyze data.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds and work under extreme heat and adverse weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proper certification to fly a drone.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Greenhouse experience.
