About the position

The Research Assistant position at NYBG is a temporary, part-time role focused on supporting the Curator of Amazonian Botany in tasks related to a taxonomic monograph. The role emphasizes the importance of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility within the organization, contributing to a culture that values these principles.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain database and update as needed
  • Process new dried plant collections
  • Organize archives of field images and botanical drawings
  • Annotate specimens of Burseraceae and return loans
  • Prepare herbarium labels
  • Prepare images of leaf clearings for publication

Requirements

  • At least 5 years using Excel, Word, and PhotoShop
  • Familiarity with KE-EMu software
  • 1 year using ChatGPT
  • At least 5 years experience working in herbaria, cataloguing, mounting, digital imaging, and filing
  • Familiar with flora and geography of Neotropics
  • Fluent in Portuguese and English; working knowledge of Spanish preferred
