About the position

The Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (LCSR) at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to innovative projects in the field of prosthesis control. This position involves the design, development, and testing of a new physiological data collection system aimed at enhancing the functionality of prosthetic devices. The successful candidate will also play a crucial role in coordinating the redesign of lab hardware and curriculum for two key courses: the Haptic Interface Design for Human-Robot Interaction course scheduled for Fall 2024 and the Mechatronics course set for Spring 2025. In this role, the Research Assistant will be tasked with developing a comprehensive data collection system that measures kinematic, eye-tracking, and EMG data. This includes conducting thorough testing and troubleshooting to ensure the system's reliability, repeatability, and accuracy. The assistant will also be responsible for collecting pilot data using the developed system with human participants, which is essential for validating the system's effectiveness. Additionally, the Research Assistant will manage the inventory and repair of Hapkit hardware for the Haptic Interface Design course, as well as electronic and mechanical hardware for the Mechatronics course. Upgrading robot tracking hardware for the Mechatronics course will also be part of the responsibilities. Collaboration with team members is vital to understand project milestones and deliverables, ensuring that all tasks align with the overall objectives of the lab.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a data collection system for measuring kinematic, eye-tracking, and EMG data.
  • Conduct thorough testing and troubleshooting of the data collection system for reliability, repeatability, and accuracy.
  • Collect pilot data using the system with human participants.
  • Inventory and repair Hapkit hardware for the Haptic Interface Design course.
  • Inventory and repair electronic and mechanical hardware for the Mechatronics Course.
  • Upgrade robot tracking hardware for the Mechatronics course.
  • Collaborate with team members to understand project milestones and deliverables.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for design and prototyping purposes.
  • Familiarity with firmware development for multi-sensor integration.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in developing and integrating mechatronics systems, preferably in the medical or robotics field.
