About the position

The Research Assistant position at Texas A&M AgriLife involves providing skilled, administrative, and managerial support in horticulture research projects. The role includes planning and directing various phases of research, conducting experiments, and maintaining detailed records of data. The Research Assistant will work closely with other team members to ensure the successful execution of research activities and contribute to the advancement of agricultural science.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of various research projects.
  • Selects and applies standard techniques of routine research and keeps detailed records of data.
  • Performs cultural practices for field and greenhouse experiments, including grounds preparation, planting, cultivation, and irrigation.
  • Calculates rates and applies agrochemicals including fertilizers and pesticides, adhering to applicable procedural and safety regulations.
  • Performs plant propagation practices and prepares and collects data from experiments.
  • Manages weed suppression and maintains pest control in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Processes and analyzes data from experiments and writes up results.
  • Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of farm, shop, and greenhouse equipment and work areas.
  • Oversees maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Solves problems specific to the mechanics of small plot work.
  • May require weekend work for irrigating field and greenhouse plots and various jobs during planting and harvest seasons.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position.
  • Good command of the English language for assisting with writing reports.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Good organizational skills.
