About the position

The Research Assistant position at the J. Paul Getty Trust involves conducting research, content development, and editorial functions specifically in the fields of modern and contemporary art. This role is designed to support the Deputy Director of the Getty Research Institute by performing various tasks such as library research, transcription, note-taking, cataloging, and photocopying. The Research Assistant may also be responsible for compiling, evaluating, and interpreting research results, contributing to conceptual project development, and coordinating projects or events from inception through completion. Additionally, the position may require writing research reports or contributing to academic publications, as well as assisting in the preparation of public presentations, which necessitates strong computer skills. The role requires a proactive approach to bibliographic assistance, acquisitions research, editing, and organizational tasks related to upcoming exhibitions and programs. The Research Assistant will also assist in the development and coordination of programmatic events, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. Responsibilities

  • Conduct library research and assist the Deputy Director with transcription and note-taking.
  • Compile, evaluate, and interpret research results for various projects.
  • Contribute to conceptual project development and coordinate events from inception to completion.
  • Write research reports and contribute to academic publications as needed.
  • Assist in preparing public presentations, requiring strong computer skills.
  • Provide bibliographic assistance and acquisitions research related to exhibitions and programs.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of programmatic events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; Master's degree, Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate in art history preferred.
  • 0-2 years of research experience (education may be considered); 2-3 years of research experience preferred.
  • Strong library skills and computing ability, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe software suites.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and interact with colleagues from various disciplines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or German is a plus.
