About the position

We are seeking a research Data Analyst in the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology (OHPE) at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. This position will work closely with Dr. Hawazin Elani and her team, which undertakes a range of health policy projects focused on disparities in oral health. The ideal candidate will have a strong enthusiasm for empirical research and a keen interest in learning new skills as projects develop. The primary responsibilities of this position include managing various datasets, estimating statistical models, and addressing reporting formats and other analysis considerations. The Data Analyst will be tasked with determining and writing statistical considerations and algorithms for protocol documents according to study design and appropriate statistical methods. Additionally, the role involves managing and maintaining documentation of files and analyses, summarizing and presenting findings through reports, tables, graphs, and models, and collaborating on manuscripts, abstracts, and other publications that document study findings. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of data collection, data review, data compilation, and analysis techniques. This includes following proper procedures for working with confidential data in compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines, as well as staying current with training requirements related to human subjects research and data security. The position requires the ability to complete tasks within competing project timelines and to engage in research dissemination activities, including presentations at lab meetings and regular updates to funding agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage various datasets and estimate statistical models.
  • Determine and write statistical considerations and algorithms for protocol documents according to study design.
  • Summarize and present findings as reports, tables, graphs, and models.
  • Collaborate on manuscripts, abstracts, and other publications documenting study findings.
  • Ensure integrity of data collection, data review, data compilation, and analysis techniques.
  • Follow proper procedures for working with confidential data in compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Engage in research dissemination activities including presentation at lab meetings and updates to funding agencies.
  • Participate in modelling work group meetings and contribute to the development of new projects and proposals.
  • Analyze electronic health records, administrative claims, and national survey data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, computer science, data science, or closely related field with 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in statistical programming languages (Python, R, or SQL).
  • Experience and knowledge of quantitative methods including causal inference and econometric analyses.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in statistics, economics, or related quantitative field preferred.
  • Experience working on public health, health services, and/or epidemiological research projects strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience with health care claims (Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance plans) strongly preferred.
