About the position

Gilead Sciences is seeking a highly motivated research associate to join the Protein Science group within the Protein Therapeutics Department. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to generate and validate therapeutic proteins and surrogate tool molecules, contributing to the preclinical development of biopharmaceutical programs across various therapeutic areas. This role emphasizes the importance of teamwork, professional judgment, and a commitment to learning new skills in a fast-paced research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform protein purification, QC, and registration to Genedata Biologics (GDB) to support preclinical development.
  • Proactively troubleshoot purification challenges and seek guidance from senior personnel.
  • Prepare technical reports, quantitative analyses, and summaries in Excel, PPT, and ELN formats.
  • Communicate scientific data effectively and update collaborators on purification status and challenges.
  • Participate in group meetings, present results, interpret data, and draw conclusions.
  • Stay informed on cutting-edge technical developments and apply them to improve process efficiency.

Requirements

  • Strong background in protein sciences and protein biochemistry.
  • At least 1 year of direct experience in purifying and characterizing recombinant proteins, particularly monoclonal antibodies and next generation biologics.
  • Hands-on experience in purification techniques including affinity, ion exchange, size exclusion, and hydrophobic interaction chromatography using Akta Avant/Pure or BioRad NGC.
  • Proficiency with analytical protein characterization techniques such as SEC-HPLC or UHPLC, SDS-PAGE, Endosafe.
  • Ability to perform method development and write protocols.
  • Detailed record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with other protein characterization technologies (DLS, SEC-MALS, LC/MS, IEX/HIC-HPLC).
  • Experience in protein formulation utilizing BigTuna or TFF.
  • Experience using autosamplers like CETAC or ALIAS.
  • Experience using automated liquid handling systems.
