About the position

The Research Associate position at Beck's Superior Hybrids is an intermediate-level role within the Research Department, focusing on agricultural and field research. The primary responsibilities include conducting mini-strip and replicated testing, coordinating plot logistics, and ensuring proper maintenance and data collection for research plots. This role requires collaboration with cooperators and adherence to Beck's standards for research practices.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate plot locations and logistics with plot cooperators
  • Measure and set flags for research plots
  • Work with cooperators to ensure proper seedbed preparation, fertility program, and weed control
  • Prepare seed for mini-strip and replicated testing
  • Plant mini-strip and replicated plots
  • Transport planting equipment to outlying locations
  • Ensure plots are planted as directed by the Testing Site Lead
  • Collect stand counts, early vigor, and plot ratings
  • Gather flowering data and evaluate physical characteristics of plants
  • Conduct disease evaluations and agronomic notes
  • Maintain plots to Beck's Hybrids' standards
  • Apply fertilizer, herbicide, and insecticide as needed
  • Transport harvest equipment to outlying locations
  • Collect fall agronomic notes and conduct harvest of plots
  • Maintain research equipment to minimize downtime
  • Report notes, harvest data, and prepare yield reports for Product Development Staff
  • Manage inventory of incoming shipments and organize outgoing shipments
  • Load/unload trucks and perform seed deliveries as needed
  • Aid in isolated corn block, nursery, and winter nursery work
  • Supervise full-time employees, part-time employees, and interns as needed
  • Work in other areas of Beck's Hybrids' operations as directed by the Testing Site Lead

Requirements

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED equivalent, advanced degree preferred
  • Class A CDL or the ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator License
  • Valid driver's license and insurable driving record
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong agronomic and mechanical skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and work independently or as part of a team
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and various software packages
  • Ability to pass DOT physical examination and obtain Medical Examiner's Certificate
  • Field research and/or agriculture experience preferred
