About the position

The Research Civil Engineer position at the Geologic Hazards Science Center focuses on conducting research in earthquake engineering, specifically aimed at reducing seismic risks to the built environment. The role involves improving structural and geotechnical responses to earthquakes, advancing seismic hazard and risk assessment methods, and engaging with external earthquake engineers. The engineer will also present research findings in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in earthquake engineering to reduce seismic risks to the built environment.
  • Investigate structural and geotechnical responses to earthquakes to improve structure behavior and reduce losses.
  • Advance seismic hazard and risk assessment methods through innovative research.
  • Engage with external earthquake engineers and represent the USGS on seismic hazard and risk questions.
  • Present research results orally and in published peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Requirements

  • Must be suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background investigation.
  • One year of work experience equivalent to GS-12 level in the Federal service, particularly in earthquake hazard and risk assessment studies.
  • A degree in professional engineering from an accredited institution or equivalent experience in engineering sciences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in presenting research findings in scientific journals and conferences.
  • Familiarity with building codes related to seismic risks.
