About the position

The Research Communications Senior Writer at the OSUCCC James Pelotonia Institute for ImmunoOncology (PIIO) plays a crucial role in translating complex scientific research into engaging and effective content. This position involves creating a variety of documents including manuscripts, grant applications, and marketing materials, while collaborating with researchers to communicate the significance and impact of their work. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of science, communication, and innovation, contributing to the advancement of cancer research.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate, organize, and contribute to the development of scientific documents.
  • Organize and edit submissions for federal and local funding.
  • Assist with literature searches and prepare reporting for grants.
  • Proofread and edit primary manuscripts, reviews, abstracts, and presentations.
  • Submit manuscripts to journals and write letters of support.
  • Communicate with authors, publishers, and stakeholders, coordinating request fulfillment.
  • Assemble and edit scientific and lay presentations for various audiences.
  • Draft and edit lay content such as press releases and newsletters.
  • Mentor graduate students and junior faculty on manuscript preparation and grant submissions.
  • Establish project plans including objectives, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Develop project databases and tracking systems.
  • Manage special projects as assigned by the PIIO director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a scientific field or journalism/communication.
  • 4 years of relevant experience required; 4-8 years preferred.
  • Robust history of scientific or technical writing with demonstrable skills.
  • Substantive experience in developing and writing grants and/or peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Knowledge or professional experience in cancer immunology or related field is desired.
  • Editorial experience in a technical or scientific field, including knowledge of publishing methods.
  • Proficiency in online publishing software and programs.
