About the position

The Research Compliance Manager at the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) plays a pivotal role in ensuring adherence to research compliance regulations and standards across the university system. This position is designed for a subject matter expert who will collaborate with various stakeholders to foster a culture of compliance and integrity in research activities. The manager will provide thought leadership on evolving compliance concerns and changes in regulatory or policy requirements, ensuring that the university remains compliant with federal, state, and institutional regulations. In this role, the Research Compliance Manager will be responsible for developing and delivering training programs, tools, and workshops on research compliance topics. They will also monitor changes in regulations and best practices, implementing necessary updates to guidance, training, and tools. The manager will lead committees, working groups, and task forces related to research compliance, facilitating consensus building among stakeholders to support institutional initiatives and guide projects to implementation. Key responsibilities include coordinating systemwide compliance committees to address complex cross-campus issues, developing benchmarks and training for complex research compliance topics, managing systemwide research compliance programs, and providing strategic leadership for risk mitigation. The position requires a strong commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, ethics, and professionalism in research conduct and compliance activities, as well as the ability to communicate complex information effectively to all levels of management and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate systemwide compliance committees to address complex cross-campus issues with significant impact.
  • Identify and support research compliance program best practices, standards, and procedures to decrease risk.
  • Develop benchmarks and training for complex research compliance topics.
  • Manage and develop systemwide research compliance programs, ensuring a coordinated approach within UCOP and among UC locations.
  • Provide cross-functional coordination for risk mitigation and participate in strategic planning with high-level management.
  • Lead committees, working groups, and task forces related to research compliance, facilitating consensus building among stakeholders.
  • Monitor changes in regulations and best practices in research compliance and implement necessary updates to guidance, training, and tools.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience or relevant work experience in research compliance functions.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal laws, regulations, and policies governing research (e.g., DOD, NIH, NSF, OHRP).
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret and apply complex regulations and policies effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering training programs and educational materials on research compliance topics.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in research compliance (e.g., Certified Research Administrator) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of state & federal laws, higher education policies, and regulations related to research compliance.
  • Use of business systems and new technologies to manage complex research compliance programs.
