About the position

The Data and Digital Services Data Analyst (DDS RDA II) position at the Department of Transportation is a critical role that involves a variety of tasks centered around data management, complex research, data analysis, and data visualization. Under the general supervision of the Data Science Branch Manager, the incumbent will work independently to perform these tasks while collaborating with various teams and staff at Caltrans. The primary focus will be on developing data reports and stories, creating data visualizations, maps, and dashboards, and identifying data trends and patterns. The role requires the analyst to seek and incorporate user feedback, ensuring that the products developed are user-centric and meet the needs of stakeholders. The DDS RDA II will utilize version control and statistical/data science programming tools, primarily Python, to iterate and improve their work continuously. While prior knowledge of Python, R, and version control is not required, the selected candidate will be expected to learn and use these tools regularly after training. In addition to data analysis, the DDS RDA II will assist in developing performance metrics and data products for use across Caltrans. This includes working on operational improvements and analytics for various operations. The role also involves creating public-facing transportation analytics products, which may include data hosted on the Caltrans Open Data Geoportal or web-hosted visualizations and dashboards that support the California Integrated Mobility Program. The selected candidate will be part of a collaborative team within the Data Science Branch, which consists of additional analysts and specialists, contributing to a diverse and inclusive work environment that values the unique contributions of each team member.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Experience in data management and analysis.
  • Proficiency in data visualization techniques and tools.

  • Familiarity with statistical programming languages, particularly Python and R (training provided).
  • Knowledge of version control systems, primarily GitHub (training provided).
