About the position

The Research Data Management Specialist at Penn State College of Medicine's Department of Surgery is responsible for providing comprehensive data management services to faculty, residents, and medical students. This role involves collaborating with IT staff to optimize data management programs and platforms, administering and maintaining database structures, and ensuring data integrity and security. The specialist will also analyze statistical data and assist researchers in preparing reports, while working closely with various stakeholders to resolve data-related issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide data management services for faculty, residents, and medical students.
  • Collaborate with IT staff to utilize optimal programs and platforms.
  • Administer, design, analyze, implement, and maintain database structures.
  • Coordinate with Surgery faculty and research staff to resolve data problems.
  • Develop and implement administrative, automation, and data integration scripts using various programming languages.
  • Ensure database optimization and integrity, including relational integrity and transaction profiles.
  • Optimize physical designs of databases for specific hardware platforms.
  • Proactively monitor systems for performance and capacity constraints.
  • Review existing databases and suggest alternatives in collaboration with research laboratories.
  • Collaborate with computing and networking staff to revamp the IBD database.
  • Test data validation error conditions to identify potential data problems.
  • Oversee the development of comprehensive application testing plans and coordinate execution and documentation of testing.
  • Provide customer service related to data management procedures.
  • Analyze statistical data and assist researchers with summarizing findings and preparing reports.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of related experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in SQL Server, Business Objects Desktop Intelligence/Web Intelligence, and SQL preferred.
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD codes for surgical procedures and billing is helpful.
