About the position

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking research and development engineers to join the Metals, Ceramics, and Coatings Processing team within the Materials Science Division. This role focuses on developing innovative solutions to support the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities by researching and developing new materials, innovative material system designs, and novel fabrication and testing methods. The position offers opportunities for collaboration, technical reporting, and field testing, with the potential for advancement based on education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems.
  • Contribute data/findings for use in technical reports, documents, or oral/written presentations.
  • Interact collaboratively with team members, engineers, and scientists to achieve organizational goals.
  • Present research, designs, and findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in field tests and exercises as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.
  • Understanding of basic engineering principles and their application to real-world problems.
  • Ability to facilitate the overall design process including conception, analysis, building, and testing for mechanical systems.
  • Comfortable working in a team environment with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with computer-aided design tools such as NX and Solidworks.
  • Familiarity with computational analysis suites like Abaqus, COMSOL, Ansys, and Matlab.
  • Mechanical/Electrical design and troubleshooting experience.
  • Machining experience.
  • Experience in creating technical reports and documents for clear comprehension.
  • Knowledge of materials characterization techniques including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction.
