About the position

The Research and Development Technician at Georgia-Pacific's Building Products Innovation Center in Decatur, GA, plays a crucial role in supporting the development and enhancement of building products through experimentation. This position involves conducting laboratory and pilot-scale tasks, including making samples and testing materials to improve product offerings such as gypsum panels and wood structural panels.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic and routine laboratory and shop tasks, including making laboratory boards and product testing.
  • Manage time effectively to prioritize and complete tasks in an organized manner.
  • Weigh out raw materials to create laboratory scale gypsum boards and structural panels.
  • Support pilot plant trials for gypsum boards, including weighing raw materials and recording process variables.
  • Cut building materials and construct prototype wall and floor assemblies up to 8' x 8' in size.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to conduct routine testing and evaluate material properties.
  • Record weights and measurements in a Microsoft OneNote-based Electronic Laboratory Notebook.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree, Bachelor's degree, or at least 2 years of laboratory or operations experience.
  • Laboratory or operations experience is required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, especially Outlook, OneNote, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in a hybrid laboratory and shop environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience weighing chemicals with balances.
  • Experience using material characterization equipment (FTIR, tensile testers, microscopes, etc.).
  • Experience using power tools (i.e., table saw, miter saw, hand drill, etc.).
  • Construction experience, such as building walls or adhering tiles.
