About the position

The Research Engineer in Computer Vision at Magna is responsible for developing software for autonomous mobile robot systems, focusing on Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (V-SLAM) and depth estimation. This role involves collaboration with the perception group and system integration teams to ensure the reliability and safety of autonomous driving technologies. The engineer will also coordinate New Mobility programs with various stakeholders, including internal departments and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate technologies and product designs for compliance with scientific and engineering principles.
  • Support the development of innovative components from concept through to production, including design, validation, and testing.
  • Contribute innovative ideas for products and processes and share information with team members.
  • Analyze engineering results and propose product changes for feasibility and performance improvements.
  • Correlate experimental data with simulation data.
  • Maintain project schedules by monitoring progress and resolving issues.
  • Specify requests and coordinate subcontracted work to ensure timely completion.
  • Confer with project engineers to clarify problems and develop designs.
  • Maintain filing systems for project information.
  • Provide engineering support to other departments as directed.
  • Prepare project progress reports and perform technical analysis tasks using relevant software.
  • Engage in continuing education and training as technology evolves.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required.

Requirements

  • Practical experience with SLAM, 3D reconstruction, optical flow, and depth from motion.
  • Experience with Vision/Lidar/Radar sensors.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and C/C++.
  • Hands-on experience with ROS/ROS2 and edge devices.
  • Experience in extrinsic and intrinsic calibration of cameras.
  • Practical experience in training and deploying deep learning models.
  • Exposure to Direct Visual SLAM/Odometry and Photometric Bundle Adjustment.
  • Familiarity with deep learning models such as semantic segmentation and monocular depth estimation.
  • Exposure to autonomous algorithms including localization and perception.
  • Strong spoken and written English language skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in research or development related to Autonomous Driving or Robotics.
  • Master's or higher degree in Engineering fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Science, Electrical, Robotics, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering.
