About the position

At Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL), we are dedicated to advancing scientific discovery and transitioning innovative technologies in various fields, including human systems, robotics, autonomy, spectrum systems, and data analytics. Our engineers are passionate problem solvers who thrive on innovation and learning, working collaboratively to deliver cutting-edge technology to our customers and the community. We engage in both externally and internally funded research and technology development projects, pushing the boundaries of Defense technology. As a Research Engineer at ATL, you will be part of a dynamic team focused on converting scientific principles into real-world applications. This role involves modeling, simulation, design, testing, and embedded development related to electrical circuits, specifically for controlling photonic systems and advanced computing systems. You will work on small, focused development teams to create innovative designs that address complex challenges in the Defense sector. Your responsibilities will vary based on program needs, allowing you the flexibility to pursue research that interests you while also providing opportunities to learn from your colleagues. You may be tasked with designing and implementing software for advanced receivers, transmitters, and antennas, as well as developing data engineering pipelines for machine learning and sensor processing. Additionally, you will support research projects aimed at providing novel solutions to unique problems, perform lab testing and integration of electronic circuits, and participate in large-scale field tests of our systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and test software for digital and RF/analog advanced state-of-the-art receivers, transmitters, antennas, and jam and anti-jam systems.
  • Design and implement data engineering pipelines in support of automated analysis of machine learning, sensor processing, and multi-target tracking research prototypes over large data sets.
  • Utilize DevSecOps fundamentals to analyze, debug, and integrate signal processing and target tracking software.
  • Support research projects to innovate and provide new/novel solutions for novel problems.
  • Perform lab testing and integration of custom analog and digital electronic circuits, as well as high performance photonic/fiber optic systems.
  • Participate in large-scale field tests where our systems are tested on the ground, at sea, and in the air on commercial or Military assets.
  • Assist in the acquisition of new business by coming up with modern day solutions to customer problems.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 0-2 years of experience in software and/or embedded design, development, and testing.
  • Working proficiency in C, C++, and/or Python.
  • Good team working and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance to at least the Secret level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Awareness of customer mission areas: Electronic Warfare (EW), RF signal intercept, RF geolocation technologies, Electronic Support Measures (ESM), Signals Intelligence (SIGINT).
  • Digital signal processing for software and/or FPGA fabric.
  • Linux system administration experience (Ubuntu and/or RedHat preferred).
  • Familiarity with practical signal processing libraries (SciPy, FFTW, GNURadio, etc.).
  • Designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines.
  • Modern wireless communication techniques and protocols.
  • Web development (React.js preferred).
  • Familiarity with machine learning algorithms and pipelines.
  • Embedded C and/or C++ development.
  • Familiarity with FPGAs and digital design/verification concepts (Xilinx preferred).
  • Linux kernel/driver development.
  • Experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, etc.).
  • Design and analysis of digital, analog, and/or RF circuits.
  • Experience with research and development in academia or corporate environments.
