About the position

The Research Engineer, Machine Learning L6 role at Netflix focuses on advancing the technology behind member-facing algorithms, particularly in the context of large language models (LLMs). The position involves developing and implementing engineering improvements to enhance recommendation systems, ensuring high-quality member experiences. Successful candidates will possess strong software development skills, a passion for problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Align and evaluate member-facing algorithms to enhance recommendation quality.
  • Conceptualize, design, and implement engineering improvements for applied research and product development.
  • Develop tools for model alignment and evaluation based on member feedback signals.
  • Write high-quality code and enhance quality metrics for machine learning products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality results.

Requirements

  • Solid software engineering experience with a track record of delivering quality results.
  • Proven experience with large scale recommender systems and the application of rewards to steer model outcomes.
  • Experience in developing standardized evaluation frameworks for context-dependent systems.
  • Proven expertise in training, fine-tuning, aligning, and evaluating LLMs and other large foundation models.
  • Experience with RLHF, reward models, model quality, and evaluation.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills with complex ML systems.
  • Strong software development experience in languages such as Python and Java.
  • Experience with Spark, TensorFlow, Keras, and PyTorch.
  • Experience with GPUs and distributed systems.
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
