About the position

The Research Engineering Scientist Associate IV position at the Center for Transportation Research focuses on conducting advanced transportation-related research, particularly in emerging mobility technologies. The role involves collaboration with government agencies and aims to provide innovative solutions to transportation challenges through data analysis and visualization techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced mathematical and statistical analyses of data to identify insights and support decision making by research sponsors.
  • Develop new methods for presenting information to decision makers, including 3-D and 4-D visualization of highway infrastructure components.
  • Create innovative analysis methods to address transportation safety, funding decision support, and policy support questions posed by sponsors.
  • Work independently or collaboratively to develop project deliverables within time and funding constraints.
  • Write or assist in writing research proposals to secure funding for projects.
  • Prepare sponsored research reports, interagency contract reports, and research papers for publication.
  • Present research findings at state, national, and international conferences.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in transportation engineering or public policy with four years of experience.
  • Prior experience working with the Texas Department of Transportation or other transportation agencies.
  • Skills in technology evaluation and strategic planning, particularly for connected and autonomous vehicles.
  • Policy analysis skills and knowledge of public affairs.
  • Experience working with teams of engineers, planners, and community organizations.
  • Experience in writing professional research papers and grant applications.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting research information to large audiences.
  • Basic skills in using Microstation and Bentley Suites Open Roads.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a transportation emphasis or similar field with two years of experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Texas transportation and regional roadway system design and operations.
  • Experience with topics influenced by mobility decisions such as freight, highway safety, and data modeling.
  • Understanding of professional and technical writing techniques.
