About the position

The Research Facility Manager at East Carolina University is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Life Sciences Biotechnology Building and the fourth floor of Ledyard E. Ross Hall. This role involves managing animal care, providing scientific support, and ensuring compliance with environmental health and safety standards. The manager will work closely with various departments and will need to be flexible to address emergencies outside of regular hours.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and provide support for research animal care, including technical assistance and guidance in approved methods and husbandry requirements.
  • Recruit, supervise, train, and evaluate student workers and direct staff reports.
  • Monitor environmental conditions of animal housing and collaborate with Facilities Services to maintain compliance with federal guidelines and institutional standards.
  • Serve as the primary contact with Facility Services and vendors for maintenance support in the vivarium.
  • Identify and purchase facility supplies and equipment in collaboration with Department of Comparative Medicine leadership.
  • Ensure proper stocking and maintenance of common use areas and shared spaces.
  • Review husbandry and environmental records to ensure proper animal care and documentation.
  • Facilitate receipt and shipment of animals and coordinate health surveillance and environmental testing programs.
  • Ensure training and monitoring for shared instrument usage and upkeep.
  • Maintain the Equipment Inventory for scientific equipment across the campus and update it annually.
  • Provide support for research projects and maintain detailed reporting of research project information.
  • Ensure maintenance of environmental health and safety compliance in shared lab spaces.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and manage non-compliance mitigations in shared lab spaces.
  • Provide basic support for building technology and maintenance of video displays.
  • Facilitate the delivery of gas cylinders and other large shipments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in animal care management and compliance with federal and institutional guidelines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing research facilities or laboratories.
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
