About the position

The University of Idaho is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Research Faculty/Extension Specialist in Forest Operations and Products Manufacturing. This is a 12-month, tenure-track role at the rank of Assistant Professor, primarily focused on outreach and Extension activities, scholarship, and university service. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing statewide leadership on the sustainable use of wood products, emphasizing the development and delivery of programming related to logging systems, transportation and logistics, and wood products manufacturing across the forest supply chain in Idaho. The position entails a significant outreach component, accounting for 70% of the role, where the Extension specialist will develop and implement educational programs that are accessible to a diverse audience, including students, county Extension educators, loggers, and community stakeholders. The candidate will also engage in scholarship and creative activities, dedicating 25% of their time to research and publication in peer-reviewed journals, while the remaining 5% will focus on university service and leadership. The Extension specialist is expected to create an externally funded, nationally recognized research and Extension program that supports the forest and wood products industry. This includes estimating values of forest products, evaluating equipment operations and productivity, assessing site impacts and safety characteristics of logging systems, and exploring transportation systems and logistics. Educational programs will be delivered through various formats, including classes, workshops, demonstrations, and digital products, ensuring that the information is accessible and relevant to the target audience. The role also involves promoting University of Idaho Extension programs through various communication channels, including newsletters, social media, and community engagement activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide statewide leadership on the sustainable use of wood products from the forest to the consumer.
  • Develop and deliver statewide programming related to logging systems, transportation and logistics, and wood products manufacturing.
  • Create an externally funded, nationally recognized research and Extension program supporting the forest and wood products industry.
  • Deliver educational programs and research results through classes, workshops, demonstrations, and digital information products.
  • Promote University of Idaho Extension programs with stakeholders, elected officials, and community partners through various communication channels.
  • Assist with Future Farmers of America (FFA), 4-H, and other technical programming related to the forest supply chain when appropriate.

Requirements

  • PhD in forestry or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Experience conducting research in Forest Operations and/or Products.
  • Experience communicating verbally, in writing, and listening with public speaking/presentation skills.
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Experience interacting with individuals through course instruction, problem solving, communication, relationship building, and leadership development.
  • Experience working on projects both independently and in a team setting.
  • Experience working with underrepresented audiences and communities.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least two years of experience delivering Extension programming or coursework related to Forest Operations and/or Forest Products Manufacturing.
  • At least two years of experience conducting research related to Forest Operations and/or Forest Products Manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with Idaho's Best Management Practices for Forestry.
  • Experience developing, delivering, and managing social media content.
  • Experience working directly with logging contractors to evaluate and communicate topics of interest related to current and emerging logging systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design innovative and effective educational programs in response to local needs.
  • Experience evaluating needs of local stakeholders through surveys, needs assessments, or similar methodologies.
  • Experience and success with grant proposal development and implementation.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and coaching others.
