About the position

The Research Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) will focus on water-related policy research, connecting research to policymaking. The role requires a strong background in water and climate policy, with an emphasis on ensuring clean water supplies, building resilient ecosystems, and preparing for climate-related challenges. The successful candidate will engage in research design, implementation, and analysis, producing publications and fostering relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with PPIC Water Policy Center researchers to identify policy research opportunities.
  • Engage in the design, implementation, and analysis of research responding to key policy opportunities.
  • Conduct original research and produce PPIC publications, including reports and policy briefs.
  • Engage and cultivate professional relationships with stakeholders through research presentations and outreach.
  • Collaborate with the WPC director and development team to seek grant support for research projects.
  • Participate actively as a member of the WPC team and the broader water resources research field.
  • Mentor junior research staff on developing research skills.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent in engineering, physical sciences, or a related field.
  • Excellent skills in quantitative and qualitative research, non-technical writing, and communications.
  • Experience with quantitative data collection and analysis, including designing and executing research studies.
  • Strong writing skills demonstrated through prior publications for various audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with colleagues in research and communications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with California water policy and freshwater ecosystems.
  • Experience in federal or other state-level research that can be translated to California context.
