The Research Finance Analyst III position at UCSF is a critical role within the Department of Medicine, specifically in the Division of Gastroenterology. In this position, the analyst will complete and approve transactions for signature by the manager or other authorized institutional officials. The work will often involve complex proposals and awards that may include multiple investigators and sub-awards, requiring the analyst to guide less experienced staff through the process. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a significant volume of transactions while performing complex financial analyses and customized reporting. This role is essential in supporting the research activities of the department, which includes a large faculty and a significant budget dedicated to research and education. The Department of Medicine at UCSF is the largest in the School of Medicine, with nearly 600 full-time faculty members engaged in top-notch research, clinical, and educational programs. The Division of Gastroenterology, where this position is located, plays a vital role in patient care, teaching, and research across multiple campus sites. The Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine, a prominent research center within the division, further emphasizes the importance of this role in advancing research initiatives and supporting faculty and staff in their endeavors.

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop and oversee research proposals, awards, and transactions related to contract and grant management.
  • Maintain contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies.
  • Complete and approve transactions for signature by the manager or other authorized institutional officials.
  • Work on complex proposals and awards that may involve multiple investigators and/or multiple sub-awards.
  • Guide less experienced staff in research administration processes.
  • Manage a significant volume of transactions and perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and three or more years of relevant experience; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to the use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
  • Ability to manage a significant volume of transactions.
  • Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal, and reporting principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures, and techniques.
  • Strong writing skills in a variety of styles to draft persuasive text for a variety of audiences while ensuring adherence to funding sponsors' guidelines.
