The Research Finance Analyst (RFA) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will play a crucial role in the post-award administration for multiple active Principal Investigators within the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics. This position requires a seasoned and experienced research administrator who can independently develop and oversee research proposals, awards, and transactions related to contract and grant management. The RFA will maintain contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies, ensuring that all activities align with the complex regulations governing research funding. In this role, the RFA will handle proposals and awards of diverse scope, necessitating a thorough understanding of complex regulations. The responsibilities include completing and approving transactions for signature by the manager or other authorized institutional officials. The RFA will work on complex proposals that may involve multiple investigators and sub-awards, guiding less experienced staff in the process. The position typically involves managing complex grants and contracts that require detailed task budgets, option years, and coordination among multiple investigators and sub-awards. The salary for this position ranges from $81,000 to $121,600 annually, with placement within this range dependent on various factors, including work experience and internal equity. The RFA will also be expected to maintain current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration, ensuring adherence to funding sponsor guidelines. The position is hybrid, requiring two days of in-person work each week, and offers a collaborative environment that fosters outstanding research across various disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analytical and transactional services in all areas of post-award administration.
  • Independently develop and oversee research proposals, awards, and transactions related to contract and grant management.
  • Maintain contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies.
  • Complete and approve transactions for signature by the manager or other authorized institutional officials.
  • Work on complex proposals and awards that may involve multiple investigators and sub-awards.
  • Guide less experienced staff in research administration processes.
  • Perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Manage a significant volume of transactions effectively.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience in research administration or finance.
  • Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software for financial analysis and fiscal management.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with a customer service focus.
  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
  • Strong writing skills to draft persuasive text for various audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements related to the use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal, and reporting principles.
  • Knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures, and techniques.
