Reporting to the Grants Manager, the Research Financial Analyst will provide essential post-award financial services to a group of 13 Research Faculty and their associated teams, which include non-faculty academics, postdoctoral fellows, laboratory staff, and students. The analyst will manage the financial operations of various sponsored extramural funds, including federal, state, and industry sources, as well as start-up packages, discretionary funds, and gift accounts. Key responsibilities include administering the financial aspects of multiple extramural funds, monitoring budgets, verifying permissible expenses, and preparing detailed financial reports and invoices for submission to funding agencies. The analyst will also serve as the primary financial liaison between principal investigators, university departments, and external funding agencies, providing ongoing financial guidance and support to researchers and assisting in audit processes. This position is vital for maintaining financial integrity and compliance within the university's research operations, and it offers an opportunity to contribute to impactful research initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and promote health equity. The salary range for this position is $81,000 - $121,600 annually, depending on experience and internal equity within the position classification at UCSF.

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop and oversee research proposals, awards, and transactions related to contract and grant management.
  • Maintain contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies.
  • Administer the financial aspects of multiple extramural funds ensuring compliance with university policies and funding body requirements.
  • Monitor budgets, verify that expenses are permissible and appropriately allocated, and prepare detailed financial reports and invoices for submission to funding agencies.
  • Serve as the primary financial liaison between principal investigators, university departments, and external funding agencies.
  • Offer ongoing financial guidance and support to researchers, addressing any financial issues that may occur and assisting in audit processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and a minimum of three years of experience or equivalent experience/training.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software for financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal, and reporting principles.
  • Ability to manage a significant volume of transactions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Strong writing skills in a variety of styles to draft persuasive text for various audiences while ensuring adherence to funding sponsors' guidelines.
