About the position

The Research Financial Analyst position at Vanderbilt University is a full-time role responsible for the comprehensive review and analysis of financial transactions related to sponsored awards. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the financial integrity of research projects by providing focused support to assigned departments throughout the lifecycle of their awards. The Research Finance Team is dedicated to excellence in administratively managing sponsored projects, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and providing analytical expertise to support Vanderbilt's research enterprise. The Research Financial Analyst will engage in various key functions, including reviewing expenditures, preparing sponsor financial reports, and performing award closeouts for a portfolio of awards. This role requires a thorough understanding of university and sponsor policies regarding expenditures and financial reporting. The analyst will also be responsible for identifying opportunities for process improvements and facilitating automation to enhance efficiency. In addition to financial analysis, the position involves task management within a Microsoft-based environment, requiring proficiency in software applications and the ability to adapt to changes in technology. The analyst will work closely with departments and Principal Investigators, addressing issues related to expenditure management and award closeouts, and will be expected to demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide focused support to departments and Principal Investigators throughout the award life cycle.
  • Review expenditures and analyze financial transactions for a portfolio of awards.
  • Prepare sponsor financial reports and perform award closeouts.
  • Analyze, resolve, and respond to problems involving expenditure management and sponsor financial reporting.
  • Perform financial reconciliation of awards.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of university and sponsor policies regarding expenditures and award closeouts.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and changes to policies and procedures.
  • Manage tasks in a Microsoft-based task tracking environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education, preferably in accounting or finance.
  • Intermediate skill in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint applications.
  • Experience with Task Management Software and various Microsoft 365 applications is preferred.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
  • Experience in higher education with a focus on research compliance and/or financial administration is preferred.
  • Proven detail-oriented work style with effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Openness to change and adaptability in various situations.

Nice-to-haves
