About the position

The Research Health Scientist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs South Texas Veterans Healthcare System (STVHCS) serves as an independent Principal Investigator and Team Leader for a research program focused on cellular signaling and metabolic diseases related to aging, particularly in the context of geriatrics and gerontology. This role involves conducting original investigations, overseeing scientific research, and preparing grant proposals to secure funding for ongoing projects.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct original investigations related to cardiolipin metabolism and metabolic diseases of aging.
  • Participate in qualitative data collection and analysis as the principal investigator of a funded research program.
  • Oversee and implement scientific investigations conducted by staff.
  • Evaluate research results and assess their potential impact on VHA practice and policy.
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals for funding of research projects.
  • Lead a team of staff in diverse research activities, coordinating functions efficiently and productively.
  • Set overall objectives and identify available resources for research projects.
  • Make presentations and represent the agency in scientific discussions.
  • Establish a systematic course of action to ensure accomplishment of scientific objectives.
  • Coordinate and conduct educational activities relevant to the area of specialty.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-12 level in the Federal service.
  • Knowledge of theories, principles, concepts, and methodologies of gerontology-based research.
  • Ability to perform complex analytical studies and interpret results.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, to make clear presentations and justify recommendations.
  • Experience in developing new methods and approaches for coordinating research projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with NIH and/or VA Merit Review Program funding processes.
  • Familiarity with geriatric research methodologies.
  • Ability to mentor and train junior staff in research techniques.
