About the position

The Research Impact and Intelligence Department of University Libraries at Virginia Tech is seeking a Research Intelligence Data Scientist to support the institution's global distinction goals through data-driven insights. This role will report to the Director for Research Impact and Intelligence and will involve building and operationalizing data solutions that enhance decision-making processes across various departments. The successful candidate will act as a liaison to the Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness office, engaging in projects that require the extraction, analysis, and visualization of research, patent, and government funding data. The position emphasizes collaboration and creativity, aiming to provide analytical insights that inform operational, tactical, and strategic decisions within the university. The Research Intelligence Data Scientist will be responsible for working on a project-based basis, which includes collecting and integrating data from diverse sources, processing it, and applying statistical methods to derive meaningful insights. The role requires a strong foundation in statistical analysis and proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R. Additionally, the candidate will utilize data visualization tools to present findings clearly and concisely, ensuring that stakeholders can easily understand the implications of the data. This position offers flexibility in work arrangements, allowing for hybrid or fully remote work, with occasional on-site collaboration as needed. Responsibilities

• Build and operationalize data solutions to provide analytical insights for decision-making processes.
• Act as a liaison to the Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness office.
• Extract, analyze, and visualize research, patent, and government funding data.

Requirements

• MS in Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, Finance, or related disciplines.
• Sound knowledge of statistical methods.
• Experience in collecting, integrating, processing, and analyzing data.
• Significant experience with Python and/or R.
• Knowledge of open source or commercial data visualization libraries/tools.
• Demonstrated experience in analyzing, summarizing, and presenting quantitative and qualitative information clearly and concisely.
• Demonstrated experience working in a highly collaborative work environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
