About the position

The Research Lab Supervisor in the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering department at Missouri University of Science and Technology is responsible for overseeing the operations of a large research laboratory. This role involves managing personnel, establishing standardized procedures, prioritizing research projects, and ensuring a safe and productive work environment. The supervisor will also handle the machinist shop, perform specialized procedures, and coordinate with faculty and students to support various research initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise personnel and manage operational activities of the research laboratory.
  • Establish standardized procedures and practices for research execution.
  • Prioritize research projects based on limited facilities space and equipment.
  • Schedule and manage work orders from multiple sources.
  • Manage the machinist shop and machine various materials into components and parts.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as research apparatus design and fabrication.
  • Prepare reports of work performed and materials lists for project billing.
  • Discuss new projects with faculty and senior research personnel.
  • Research and analyze information to make informed judgments for research execution.
  • Coordinate external projects with other departments and off-campus collaborators.
  • Assist in the coordination of quality control procedures within the research function.
  • Develop working relationships with internal and external parties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a related field.
  • Highly skilled in operating manual machine shop equipment (CNC and milling machines, lathes, etc.).
  • Proficient in Mig, Tig, Arc, and gas welding.
  • Experience supervising multiple staff members.
  • Ability to work with a variety of materials including wood, plastic, glass, and metals.
  • Minimum of 10 years machining experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's Degree in Machine Tool operations or similar field.
  • Experience with concrete mix use and formwork.
  • Ability to train students and assist in oversight of their safety.
