About the position

The Research Lab Tech II position at Massachusetts Eye and Ear focuses on studying inner ear development and hearing loss, with the goal of developing treatments for these conditions. The role involves performing laboratory experiments, maintaining supplies, and ensuring compliance with safety guidelines, all within a collaborative and nurturing environment that promotes career advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory experiments including cell culture, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, general biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.
  • Conduct general laboratory animal work and handle laboratory mice.
  • Consult with the investigator on experimental design and implement necessary adjustments with approval.
  • Record, review, and analyze test results, assessing data quality and repeating tests as necessary.
  • Perform literature searches and assist in preparing presentations and written articles for publication.
  • Maintain common laboratory supplies, solutions, and buffers, preparing and determining their suitability.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Order laboratory supplies as necessary within budgetary limits.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and federal guidelines in health, safety, and animal work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological or physical science.
  • At least one year of post-Bachelor's experience or a Master's degree.
  • Experience in a directly related research setting preferred.
  • Willingness to work with animal models.
  • High degree of computer literacy.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with RNA isolation and general biochemistry techniques.
  • Familiarity with ethical research practices and guidelines.
