About the position

The Research Lab Technician I position at the University of Southern California (USC) involves supporting cancer research by extracting high-quality DNA and proteins from various biological samples. The technician will work under the supervision of the lab manager and principal investigator, performing essential laboratory functions and maintaining detailed records of sample analyses and laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Extract high-quality DNA and protein samples using manual or machine-assisted techniques.
  • Assess sample characteristics such as DNA concentration, contamination, and size using various analytical methods.
  • Store and retrieve specimens in -80C and liquid nitrogen sample freezers according to established protocols.
  • Maintain detailed physical and electronic records of sample and study information in Excel.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office and PowerPoint to prepare reports and presentations.
  • Order laboratory supplies and assist the Project Manager in tracking and storing laboratory samples.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in a related science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Coursework in molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction and PCR amplification.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and maintain accurate records.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and efficiently complete tasks within a given timeframe.
  • Developed computer skills, especially with Microsoft Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • BA/BS degree in Biological Sciences.
  • Experience processing biological specimens and executing established laboratory protocols.
  • Ability to extract DNA from Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded tissues.
  • Experience with Taqman Genotyping and Immunoassays such as Luminex.
  • Knowledge of automated instrumentation and ability to work in a BSL2 laboratory.
