About the position

The Research Program Coordinator at the University of Texas at San Antonio plays a crucial role in supporting advanced research activities within the Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Lab. This position focuses on immune mechanisms in response to viral respiratory infections and environmental exposures, overseeing day-to-day lab operations, managing resources, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The coordinator will be involved in experimental design, data collection, analysis, and supervision of technical staff and students, contributing to significant research projects related to respiratory viruses and their effects on vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and oversee specialized technical research utilizing advanced scientific equipment and methodologies.
  • Perform respiratory virus production, quantitation/tittering, protein chemistry, electrophoresis, western blotting, ELISAs, and flow cytometry.
  • Carry out diagnostic histology and lung function analysis in neonatal and adult mice, including complex procedures such as tracheostomy and tracheal intubation.
  • Process human blood samples for RSV and COVID-19 studies, ensuring compliance with protocols.
  • Manage animal husbandry, genotyping, and exposure experiments, including RSV infection and surgical procedures.
  • Oversee lab operations including ordering, purchasing, inventory, safety compliance, and equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare and monitor lab budgets, ensuring alignment with funding agency requirements.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in advanced research techniques.
  • Assist laboratory members in completing specific experiments and collaborate on research projects.
  • Present data at laboratory meetings and ensure the integrity of experimental data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of experience working with neonatal mice and respiratory syncytial virus.
  • Experience in grant or research administration and maintaining laboratory equipment and budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing laboratory staff, including recruitment and performance evaluation.
  • Experience coordinating research activities and data analysis.
