About the position

The Research Scientist 2 in Epidemiology will play a crucial role in overseeing and analyzing Newborn Screening (NBS) testing algorithms and laboratory data. This position is under the direction of a Research Scientist 6 and involves ensuring that the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) operates accurately and efficiently. The incumbent will be responsible for improving existing screening algorithms, optimizing methodologies, and developing new testing algorithms based on comprehensive data analytics. Additionally, the role includes managing the transmission, receipt, and processing of hospital-provided infant demographic data, as well as the development and implementation of the next phase of HL7 messaging. The ultimate goal of these activities is to enhance quality improvement and reduce turnaround times in the screening process. The position requires a strong foundation in research methodologies and the ability to critically analyze complex data sets. The incumbent will also need to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure that the NBS testing processes are effective and meet the necessary health standards. Given the nature of the work, the selected candidate may be exposed to potentially hazardous substances and will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. The work hours may vary, and some travel throughout New York State may be necessary, including overnight trips to areas not served by public transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and critical analysis of Newborn Screening (NBS) testing algorithms and laboratory data.
  • Ensure the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) operates accurately and efficiently.
  • Improve existing screening algorithms and optimize methodologies.
  • Develop new testing algorithms based on data analytics.
  • Manage the transmission, receipt, and processing of hospital-provided infant demographic data.
  • Develop and implement the next phase of HL7 messaging to improve quality and reduce turnaround times.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree AND three years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.
  • Knowledge of genetics and understanding of clinical testing at the bench level.
  • Experience with databases, SQL, and laboratory information management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Familiarity with health equity, social determinants of health, and health disparities.
