About the position

The Research Scientist 2 position at the Minnesota Department of Health focuses on assessing human health risks associated with contaminated sites. Responsibilities

  • Identifies, assesses, and communicates human health risks linked with contaminated sites.
  • Recognizes and evaluates exposure to chemicals from hazardous waste sites and other health risks.
  • Collaborates with a team to evaluate site hazards and develop strategies for communicating health risks to the public.
  • Works with other state agencies and programs to ensure regulatory actions prioritize health protection.

Requirements

  • Three years of analytical research experience in the environmental health science field, with technical knowledge in at least two areas such as biological sciences, environmental public health, hydrogeology, toxicology, or environmental chemistry.
  • In-depth knowledge of scientific methods, including analysis of environmental data, integrating chemical, physical, and mathematical principles.
  • Proficient in organizing and writing complex technical reports and research papers, with strong skills in exposure assessment and environmental science.
  • Capable of understanding and applying principles of risk communication effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • A bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, mathematical, statistical, or physical sciences, or equivalent training and experience in environmental health or related fields.
  • Professional experience in risk communication, planning, and analysis in public environmental health programs.
  • Familiarity with state and local public environmental health programs.
  • Understanding of exposure assessment and health risk assessment principles and techniques.
  • Experience using ArcView/GIS.
